In the centre of Belfast is the City Hall which is from the Victorian
era and is a real focal point. Near the City Hall is Donegal Square
which is at the heart of the city and a rare grassy park in this city.
The ceasefire in 1994/95 has brought a large amount of investment
to the city and has really transformed this great historic city and
now there is a new energy to the place, where the streets are becoming
full again and the tourists are starting to come over and witness
the changes. With more hotels and apartments, Belfast is fast becoming
a real attraction for anyone with a few days to discover the beauty
of Northern Ireland. Within an hour or two, one can reach the Bushmills
distillery from Belfast, as well as the famous Giants Causeway and
that famous rope bridge at Carrig a Ride which attracts thousands
of tourists during the summer and one can take a spin through the
lovely coastal road up over the Glens of Antrim, buy yourself an ice
cream and admire the most amazing views of Mull of Kintyre over in
Scotland which is only 12 miles away or head up to Portrush and bring
the kids to the Amusement park or even stroll down the beautiful beach
with your loved one. All of Northern Ireland is relatively accessible
from Belfast due to the fantastic Motorway system there.
Right in front of the City Hall is where the main shopping district
is located. Its quite compact so all the shops are generally
together in the one place. Down Donegal Place and Royal Avenue
away from the City Hall, and the shopping area stretches out
to Victoria Street on the right. King Street on the left and
straight up North Street. On Royal Avenue you have the Castle
Court Shopping centre with its glass roof and it has lovely fountains
and cafes, and its also the largest shopping centre in the city.
Smaller arcades litter the city and examples like Queens Arcade
which has great specialist shops.
Between Ann Street and High Street there are little alley ways
that are called the Entries. From old saloons for example the Whites
Tavern, which is considered the oldest pub in Belfast. The Entries
are close by the Cathedral Quarter around St. Anne’s Cathedral.
This area is rejuvenated and has many new apartments and cafes.
The Cathedral Quarter was targeted to be a new trendy cool place
to hang out and the development of the arts and entertainment centre
in Belfast has brought about great excitement to Belfast.
