Maybe start in the centre of town at the City Hall. This Victorian
building was built in the 1890s to express the citys industrial
power and it stands out as the most recognised landmark in all of
the city. The city centre is very compact and it surrounds the City
Hall. The great thing about the city centre is that its pedestrianised
and one can stroll around at their own ease.
Belfast centre has lots of Victorian architecture with the likes
of the department stores around the city as well as the Albert Clock.
The Castle Court Shopping Complex is a symbol of Belfast turning
the corner and regaining its popularity with all shoppers again.
The main historical attractions can be seen within walking distance
from the City Hall. Take a walk past the Royal Courts of Justice
and ramble down towards the Waterfront. Major redevelopments are
taking place with new apartments and hotels springing up, and one
must take in the Waterfront Hall which is a glass circular building
and houses a great auditorium where one can listen to the best of
music in this classy building. Maybe amble around here and go for
a coffee.
Only a couple of minutes away is the famous Golden Mile, which
spans from the Queens University to the city centre. There is great
nightlife around here to keep you dancing into the early hours of
the morning. On the way is the Europa Hotel, which is the most bombed
out hotel in all of Europe, but one of the greatest attractions
is the Opera House which is a type of 19th century Mosque - like
building that is a real gem. There is also a beautiful pub called
the Crown Liquor Saloon which is very ornate and has beautiful snugs
that cater for families and groups and is well worth stopping off
for a pint or a coffee.
The pub is so cherished that the National Trust owns it and the
Brewery company, Bass , runs the establishment. The University is
only up the road and was built in the 19th century and is home to
the Belfast Festival which is now the second largest arts Festival
in the British Isles. Nearby is the Ulster Museum which has a great
collection of Art, and nearby is the Botanic Gardens which are very
beautiful and one would be advised to linger her and enjoy the surroundings,
especially the most impressive Palm House which is compared a lot
to the great glasshouses at Kew. The Stranmillis Village is just
past the University and has lots of shops and cafes.
