Carrickfergus, Giants Causeway and Bushmills

Carrickfergus castle is the finest example of a Norman castle in Ireland. It guards the mouth of Belfast Lough. The road along Antrim’s coast is spectacular and is well worth a visit where one can drive up through the Glens of Antrim and the road brings you up to Ballycastle which is a beautiful resort town. A few miles past Ballycastle is the Carrig A rede rope bridge which is just beautiful and it costs £2 and you cross the rope bridge onto a volcanic island stack in the sea. Next in the area is the most unusual Giants causeway which is a volcanic rock formation where most of the rock is a sort of hexagonal shape that is structured vertically. The scenery here is amazing and its a lovely half an hour walk around this site.

The site is free of charge and if your not interested in walking you can take the bus which is 70p one way. I would recommend walking up the hill first and then coming down to get close to the causeway which has to be seen to be believed.

Another site in the area is Bushmills distillery, which is the oldest legal distillery in the world. The tour cost £4.50 and is really worth it because you get a free glass of whiskey at the end of the tour. This whiskey is magnificent and is truly tasty stuff.

To the South of Belfast is the town of Bangor. Bangor is a lovely seaside resort and there are many fishing villages nearby. Strangford lough is nearby where so much wildlife is sheltered here. Mountstewart and Castle Ward are also in this region. Downpatrick is also in this area where it was originally the resting place of Saint Patrick, Irelands patron saint.
