The East
The mouth of the Lagan river is on the right of the City Hall. Much
investment was poured into this area and especially along the waterfront.
What is now Belfast’s pride and joy is the new Waterfront Hall
where one can go to a concert here or stop for a coffee and have
a look at the auditorium. Also built recently is the Odyssey arena
which opened to the public in 2000 and is a massive entertainment
complex and one of the biggest in the world.
The West
The divide between the sectarian divisions of Belfast is displayed
here. The Protestant neighborhood are separated from the Catholic
areas. The main road that goes through the Protestant area is
the Shankill Road and the Catholic equivalent is the Falls Road.
With peace in the air, West Belfast is now becoming more and
more peaceful and that its just another inner city area like
any other city in the world. Although a rougher history, the
areas are becoming less threatening. Petty crime astonishingly
enough is non existent up in Belfast which explains more about
Northern Irelands culture and its great people.
The North
The Cave Hill acts as the back drop for North Belfast, looking
down on this neck of the woods. They say that if you look closely
you will see a resemblance of Napoleons nose which resembles
a man lying down and the nose is pointing up. They say that Jonathon
Swift got inspiration from this feature for his book, Gulliver
Travels. On this hill is the Belfast Castle which was built in
1870 and if you go further up the hill you will see the Irish
Sea and the neighbouring countryside and on a clear day you will
see Scotland.
